Minister’s Musings – Differences 2/16/22

Our February theme: “Widening the Circle”

Differences are not intended to separate, to alienate. We are different precisely in order to realize our need of one another.— Desmond Tutu

Dear Friends,

Archbishops Tutu’s words were very timely for me this week, as I discussed with a small group some possible scenarios that could present themselves should our nation continue what feels to me like a slow descent into climate and political crisis. I know those aren’t the easiest words to read, but there’s good news too – lots of people like me, who are imagining possibilities, are gathering resources and learning to understand their skills and those of the folx with whom they’re in community, so that, in the event they’re needed, we’re prepared.

And that’s where the quote for this week resonates for me – a group of folx with a variety of life skills and experiences will be far stronger than a group of folx who gather because they share the same interests and skills.

The same is true for our Reeb community! We have different identities and social locations, education levels, access to resources and services, perspectives, and so many other factors, and those differences create such a wide range of ways of seeing and responding to the world – which, in turn, manifest as many kinds of creativity. And that makes for many kinds of resources available to us as a whole. I’m so grateful that we learn and practice curiosity for, welcoming of, and celebrating difference together, helping us to grow and strengthen both individually and collectively!

In faith and love,

Karen
