As I write this column, it has been a week since Corey Ruiz was killed at the hands of police officers here in Madison. It has been a week filled with community ministry – be it supporting the impact of this event at the hospital, or working to support those holding vigil on Willy and Baldwin St. I have had the privilege of serving as an Action Medic here in Madison, and this week have been offering medical and chaplain support to the protesters. 

One of the chants that I have heard repeatedly is: “Who keeps us safe? We keep us safe!” I have watched this neighborhood come together in support of each other in a beautiful way. The space where Corey was killed has become a camp for vigil and support of neighbors. You need a meal? You got one. A place to sleep? Here’s an air mattress. Injured? Our medics are right there. 

I have been grieving the loss of Corey Ruiz, the broken system which failed him, and the way white supremacy hurts us all. And, in that grief, I have seen community show up in a beautiful way. It is living in community, even among strangers, that I feel held in my grief and anger.

Beloved Reebers, now more than ever is the time to show up for one another. Let us live out this display of community in our own way! Get to know your neighbors, reach out to your friends, and take care of one another. Let’s keep each other safe.
