On Freedoms: Yours, Mine, Theirs, and Ours

There are two ways (at least!) to frame freedom: “freedom from” restrictions on our actions, and “freedom to” behave in ways we wish to.  These can be in tension with each other; promoting “freedom from” for some is sometimes accused of infringing on the “freedom to” rights of others.  This morning, we’ll explore the relationship between these freedoms through individualistic and communal perspectives. • The Share the Plate recipient for June 8 and June 15 is Just Dane, a local nonprofit offering services to people and families with involvement in the criminal justice system. Their programs like Just Bakery and Circles of Support help people re-enter society after incarceration. They also have programs designed to support children who have an incarcerated parent. They are the fiscal sponsor for Moms on a Mission, the East High parent group that passes out snacks in front of our building. They were nominated by Deb Myrbo.
