E-News Summary 9-8-21

Preparing for Water Communion This Sunday! Rev. Karen is so disappointed that we can’t meet in the sanctuary to share water and stories. But we can still share, and we invite you into several activities to help this service be as relational as possible.

First, please send us your pictures to be part of a slide show during the service! We’d love a picture of yourself in any location, so we can see your face. We also welcome pictures of you and/or your loved ones near water, pictures of a body of water that’s meaningful to you, pictures of drawings or paintings or other representations of water – anything that can be saved as an image file. Multiple pictures are welcome! Please send your picture(s) to Bret Buchanan by Thursday, September 9.

Second, please bring us your water to be blended during the service! It can be water you’ve collected from a place that’s meaningful or water from your home or anywhere else. Rev. Karen will blend the waters we receive – and then you’ll receive a small vial of blended water the week after the service. She will be in front of the JRUUC building on

  • Thursday 9/9 at 3:30-4:30 pm,
  • Friday 9/10 at 7:30-8:30 pm (this is changed from last week’s announcement!), and
  • Saturday 9/12 at 3:00-4:00 pm and 7:00-8:00 pm

Please bring your water in a small container, and wear a mask.

Finally, please spend a little time before the service reflecting on your connection to water, or to the place from which your water came. We’ll invite you all to unmute and turn on your video, so we can all speak briefly.

UU Music and Culture Event – Thursday Sept. 16 @ 6:30 – I will be hosting a 2 hour event providing the opportunity to explore how music shapes our culture and experience. This is a chance to humanize stories and information and provide a widening of our awareness of others’ perspectives. Space will be made for each participant to speak and to be heard. There will be some breakout groups within the 2 hour period. Ideally 8-12 participants in a variety of ages would make for an effective event.

Outdoor Work Day at JRUUC – Saturday September 18, 9-11

Come to an in-person JRUUC picnic Sept 18th!

The Membership Team is inviting everyone to a picnic at noon, Saturday Sept. 18. Meet at the lower lawn of Burrows Park (just off of Sherman Ave, turn towards the lake by Banzo), between the parking lot and the lake). Bring your own food, drinks, chairs and masks. We especially encourage attendance by people who have joined us since COVID started. We would like to meet you in person! For anyone not able to come in person who wants to briefly join the group virtually, please contact Kelly at kearns@uwalumni.com

Survey says…. Please tell us what you think!

You received an email earlier with links to three separate surveys about religious education for children and youth, our justice work and involvement in the community, and your sense of connection to our congregation. Please take a few minutes to fill them all out, and help our leaders understand your needs as we discern how to work together toward our shared mission.

Sign up for Covenant Groups! – Covenant Groups are part of the Adult Religious Exploration Program at JRUUC. Groups are randomly created at the start of each church year, based on the availability of people interested, and they meet monthly via Zoom. They are closed groups, for confidentiality and community-building, and are made up of 6 to 10 people plus a facilitator. They have several purposes: to build relationships through the practice of deep listening, and to practice shared ministry with each other and our congregation as a whole. Please see this brochure for more information, and sign up here if you’d like to be part of a virtual or in-person Covenant Group this year.

Starting Back Up – Journaling with Jean Skinner – Every other Monday 7-8pm, starting 9/20 – Join us to explore journaling and other writing, every other week on Mondays, starting September 20th. We meet from 7 – 8 PM. This is an informal group that has a good time connecting with each other and looking inward. No experience necessary; just bring something to write on and something to write with.  This is a drop in group but the day we meet is subject to change, with some advance notice, so if you are new and planning to join, you might want to let Jean know at skinnerjean6@gmail.com so you can be notified of any changes. Changes will also be sent to the weekly newsletter.
